CHAPTER 19

Cassie slowed nearly to a crawl, eyes on the car ahead.

“Is it your father’s?” Clif asked.

“No. He died two years ago. Mom sold it back to the dealership.” Cassie ducked, peering through the windshield.

“No one inside. Perhaps we shouldn’t stop.”

Cassie stopped anyway, her gaze darting as dread tightened her stomach.

Her pulse raced. What if this had all been a trap? Would they be attacked if she pulled into that parking lot? Maybe she shouldn’t get out of the car. Or leave the engine running.

“Cassandra, there is no reason to take a chance.”

She snapped her gaze to the man next to her—now a pirate from the eighteen hundreds instead of her friend, Nate. “You of all people should think taking chances is always the good route.”

“Calculated risks, yes. Not blind ones.”

Her jaw tensed. She’d been nervous bringing Nate—Clif, rather—with her, but now she was glad to have him there. At least someone would be with her if anything happened.

“Maybe…maybe I should text someone. Tell someone where we are. Just in case.”

“I thought that was not permissible?” Clif asked.

Cassie pressed her lips together. “It’s not. I just…I’m a little scared if I’m being honest. That car is empty.”

“Do you have a pistol?”

“What?” Cassie shook her head. “No, I don’t have a pistol. And I don’t have a sword, either, so don’t even ask.”

“Obviously, you do not have a sword. I just thought you may be an enterprising woman who had a pistol in her glove box.”

Cassie clicked her tongue, her eyes still straining to see into the darkness for any sign of someone lurking. “I don’t. I have a taser.”

She reached for her purse and dug through it, producing the weapon. “Ri liked it.”

“Ah, yes,” Clif said with a devilish grin. “I’ve seen these before.”

He pressed the buttons to activate it. Electricity crackled from the end, startling Cassie.

“Stop that,” she said, pressing a hand to her chest. “That’s not funny.”

“Sorry. I just find it fascinating. I would need to be quite close to the individual to use this, but I’m no stranger to hand-to-hand combat, so I shouldn’t have an issue.”

“You can’t get out of this car, Clif. If my father sees you⁠—“

“And runs, he is to be suspected. If he sees me and respects you for not being foolish enough to come here alone, then perhaps he can be trusted.”

Cassie’s lips parted as she stared at him. “No. He said to come alone. Tell no one. Trust no one. That’s not negotiable. If he sees that I’ve not only told someone, but someone who is…well, that I don’t even know that well, he’s going to run.”

“All right. I will exit the vehicle here while you go forward alone. I will remain close, but unseen. Is that acceptable?”

She sat for a moment, her eyebrows knitting as she considered the plan. “Okay. Yes. I think that will work. I’m sorry, I just…don’t want to lose my dad a second time.” Her voice broke on the last word, her features pinching as she held back tears.
